The
Department of Chemistry of St. Alberts College was recognized as a Research
Centre under M. G. University, Kottayam in the year 2000. Research
interests of the department are all-encompassing various field of fundamental
and applied Chemistry such as the marine chemistry, organic synthesis, organic
catalysis, organometallic homogeneous catalysis, polymer chemistry and interdisciplinary
areas as well. The Research undertaken by the Department is aimed at
addressing contemporary cross-cutting issues of the society.
The
Kerala State Pollution Control Board has accredited our Water Analysis /Pollution control laboratory
as a ‘B’ grade analytical laboratory in 2007, while the Ministry of Science and
Technology Government of India, has identified the department as a ‘FIST aided
Department’ in 2008 and 2013. The Department is one of the beneficiary
departments of “Star College” scheme of DBT.
The
Department laboratory is equipped with various analytical instruments for
chemical and spectral analysis of chemical substances. Our ‘Water Quality
Analysis Lab’ is equipped with pH meter, conductivity meter, BoD incubator,
turbidimeter , microwave oven microwave oven, double distillation unit,
autoclave and a laminar flow chamber. The centralised DST- FIST funded
laboratory has sophisticated instruments like HPLC, rotary evaporator,
uv-visisble spectrophotometer, gas chromatography, IR spectrophotometer, ultrasonicator
etc. which help in smooth conduct of research works. To imbibe a research
culture among its students, the research wing of the Department has been
regular in hosting international and national seminars, providing a platform
for researchers, students, representatives of regulatory authorities and
Industry to interact and exchange views on current trends in research and
innovation and future prospects and possibilities. Presently there are eight research guides for
the department, out of which four are external teachers. Till date, four
research scholars from our centre have been successfully awarded a doctoral
degree in Chemistry by Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and eight others are
journeying towards the same.
